Stick in the Mud and Spit in the Eyes

In the Mishnah it is stated: “To heal a blind man on the Sabbath it is prohibited to inject wine in his eyes. It is also prohibited to make mud with spittle and smear it on his eyes” (Shabbat 108:20).

According to the Mishna, “One should be willing to walk four miles to water in order to wash your hands rather than to eat with unwashed hands” (Sotah, 4b) .. . “He who neglects hand washing is as he who is a murderer” (Challah, J, 58:3).

Matt. 3:10-12;10:34-38; Mark 2:21-22; Luke 12:49; John 2:14-17; 4:21-24

I guess not only was Jesus rubbing spittle and mud in the man’s eyes that healed, but he was also rubbing it in the faces of the religious authorities.
